Persimmons [memodemo]

from FOUNTAIN OF JOY by Paul Kotheimer

/

about

Written and recorded, with just minutes to spare, before the beginning of the songwriter's workshop led by Adrianne Lenker at SchoolofSong.org, in January 2024.

lyrics

i saw jenny goodwine by the persimmon tree
i said hey jenny, say, do you have any
persimmons you could lend to me?
cause i’m a-gonna bake a persimmon bread
so half a dozen? maybe two or three?
but no, said jenny, i haven’t got any
those persimmons ain’t ripe, you see.

said jenny, it’s the summertime. you gotta wait for fall
then they’ll all drop down and be scattered all around
and you can come and collect them all
but if you pick em from the branch there’s a pretty good chance
that your persimmons will be sour not sweet
so the moral of the rhyme is give it time
and in the summer bake a different treat.
