lyrics

Who needs art when you've got a steady pay check? I'm making almost nine dollars an hour. --At least that's what theman upstairs wants for me to believe, and I won't diss him. He's got the hiring power, and the firing power. And hey, I'm only twenty grand down to the Federal government. It's my education that's got me this far. I'll have it all paid off 'bout two thousand ten. By then I'm sure to be a big star with a fancy car, but still, I'd keep my day job. I love my day job. It's just a day job. I need my day job. My day job...yeah.

I got a plate glass window. It's got a great big view. I'm right around the corner from the commuter train. In walks an old friend of mine, he's got a beeper and a dark blue suit. He's just a monkey on a chain--a wallet chain. At 5:15 they come for magazines, chewing gum, and cigarettes, and I let 'em all just disappear. Sure, sometimes I daydream of a Carmengia, or a publishing deal, but that won't take me away from here because this is my day job. I love my day job. I need the pay from my day job. This is my day job. My day job.

While dusting the paperbacks yesterday, I had a revelation, and now I know what Tom Clancy would say to me. He would say, "Son, don't quit your day job. Better keep that day job. You never know who your friends are and who is the enemy."

So who needs art when you got a steady pay check? I'm making almost nine dollars an hour. Who cares if my time is worth only three per cent of all them brokers and buyers and bankers and lawyers and jokers and liars? They've got the power. They've got the power... My momma said, attitude like that, you will never get out of that day job. La la.
